Evaluation of the Capacity Building for Minority-Led Organizations Project

The California Endowment (TCE) launched the Capacity Building for Minority‐
Led Organizations Project in late 2008. TCE has a long‐standing commitment to diversity and equity, accounting for more than 50 percent of grant dollars (approximately $80 million annually) allocated to minority communities in 2008. Yet, recognizing the continuing need in the communities they serve, TCE –as part of a coalition of nine additional funders with aligned goals—saw the Capacity Building for Minority‐Led Organizations Project as an opportunity to augment its commitment to diverse communities, specifically by investing in capacity building for minority‐led community organizations. SPR was contracted to serve as an evaluator of this effort in October 2009. The evaluation focused on understanding the outcomes of TCE’s investment in strengthening minority‐led organizations and learning about successful capacity building and leadership development strategies utilized by intermediary funders.
