We are pleased to announce the recent hiring of Dr. Iris Daruwala to the position of Senior Associate in our Education division. Dr. Daruwala is a Senior Associate with expertise in education policy, cross-sector collaboration, and organizational sociology. Her research examines the organizational sustainability of education reforms, the role of philanthropy in shaping education policy, and the relationship between education policies and social stratification. Prior to joining SPR, she designed and led mixed methods impact evaluations and implementation studies at the Consortium for Policy Research in Education (CPRE) at Teachers College, Columbia University, which ranged from randomized experiments and quasi-experimental studies of program effectiveness to qualitative implementation studies of federal policies.
Her dissertation explored the implementation and sustainability efforts of cross-sector collaboration strategies in education, in which she found that discrepancies in sensemaking across stakeholders undermined their legitimacy and long-term sustainability. As a sociologist of education, she has always been conscientious of the unequal power dynamic that exists between funders, researchers, and study participants—a lens she hopes will support SPR’s equity mission. She received her Ph.D. in Sociology and Education from Teachers College, Columbia University, and her B.A. in International Development Studies from UC Berkeley.
SPR is thrilled to welcome Dr. Daruwala, and we look forward to drawing on her skills, expertise, and passion as we continue to expand our education portfolio.
